‘Ma Tum Tea’ is made from the fruit of the Bael Tree (also known as Wood-apple) that is found growing wild in many areas of Thailand. The tea has been used by many generations to treat a wide range of ailments.
The fruit takes 11 months to ripen on the Bael tree and the shell is so hard that it has to be cracked open with a machete or hammer. Please don’t worry though, you will not need to use a machete or a hammer as the fruit is prepared and ready for a simple brewing! It is sliced thinly and dried at source before being stored for use.

The tea is made from the fruit is known to have many wonderful health properties and is used to treat a wide range of conditions and ailments such as, Respiratory Health, Cholesterol Control, Diabetes and many stomach conditions including Ulcers, Diarrhoea and Constipation. Daily consumption of the tea is also known to assist the digestive system and will provide you with many benefits that will help you lead a healthy life.
The tea is simple to make by boiling around 1 ltr. of water (enough for 4 or 5 cups) and adding 4 or 5 pieces of the dried fruit. It should then be simmered for 15 minutes until the tea is brewed with a lovely clear brown colour. The tea should then be strained through a fine sieve in order to remove the fruit and then your delicious and medicinal tea is ready to drink. It you would like to enhance the aroma, prior to the preparation of the tea the dried fruit can be gently toasted (be careful not to burn it !) and then brewed.
The entire 200 grms. of the fruit can be toasted at the same time and then stored in a sealed container in the fridge ready for use.
The Matum Tea is a safe drink however you should avoid drinking the tea when pregnant or breast-feeding and care should be taken if diabetic as it may lower your blood sugar level. It is also suggested that you avoid using this fruit if you suffer from hypertension (High Blood Pressure).
